I know a few things now. I’ve done my time in this world, learned a little of this and a little of that, but I never quite grasped the boy scouts’ pinewood derby. Each year, a group of aggressively competitive dads, I mean, little boys, spend countless hours whittling away at a block of pine in hopes that the end result will not only look like a racecar of sorts, but also that it will speed down a track to ultimate victory over hundreds of other similar vehicles.
And there ends my pinewood derby knowledge, for when my eight-year old boy brought home the kit, which was essentially the block of wood, some nails and four plastic wheels, I took one look and thought, “There’s no way I can help with this thing.”
